From Fluid System to Technical Ownership:

A high-performance water-based mud should do more than control shale in a standard formulation. It should remain manageable as drilled solids accumulate, adapt when water chemistry or formation conditions change, and help the operator maintain drilling continuity without repeated dilution or constant external intervention. That combination of inhibition, operational flexibility and control is the idea behind AQUA FUSION.
Strong inhibition is the starting point
Reactive and sticky clays do not only create a swelling problem. As they hydrate and disperse, they increase the active-solids content of the mud, drive rheology upward, reduce solids-control efficiency and contribute to bit balling and BHA accretion.
The conventional response is often more dilution. This may temporarily bring the fluid back into range, but it creates additional mud volume, chemical consumption, waste and transport requirements.
AQUA FUSION was developed as a highly inhibitive water-based system for these conditions. At its core is CS SWELLEX, a polyamine shale inhibitor designed to reduce clay hydration and dispersion as drilled solids enter the circulating system.
In laboratory testing, a SWELLEX-treated base fluid maintained controlled rheology through bentonite concentrations of up to 70 ppb. This does not imply unlimited solids tolerance; it provides a measurable indication of how the inhibition package delays the rheological impact of reactive clay loading.
Field performance provides the more important operational evidence. In one AQUA FUSION application through 3,000 ft of highly reactive shale, MBT remained below 15 and total dilution was held below 10%, compared with a 46% regional benchmark. The interval was drilled without interruption.
The relevance of these results is not simply a lower MBT number, but the connection between effective inhibition, controlled active solids, lower dilution demand and more consistent drilling-fluid behaviour.
From clay control to drilling performance
Inhibition is only valuable when it improves what happens at the rig.
By keeping drilled clays firmer and less dispersed, AQUA FUSION helps the solids-control equipment remove them more effectively, limiting the build-up of fine reactive solids and making it easier to maintain the required rheological profile as drilling progresses.
AQUA FUSION complements this inhibition with DRILL FUSION, CS OILFIELD’s ROP-enhancing and lubricating component developed to reduce bit balling, BHA accretion, torque and drag in water-based drilling fluids.
SWELLEX primarily controls the interaction between the formation and the fluid. DRILL FUSION supports the mechanical behaviour of the system around the bit, BHA and wellbore. Together, they connect fluid chemistry with drilling continuity.
What AQUA FUSION can mean at the rig
From a drilling and fluids engineering perspective, AQUA FUSION can provide the following operational benefits:
• More stable rheology under reactive-solids loading, with fewer corrective treatments.
• Lower overall dilution demand, reducing the cost of new mud preparation, replacement chemicals, waste handling and disposal.
• Reduced bit balling and BHA accretion, sustaining ROP through sticky and reactive formations, particularly when DRILL FUSION is incorporated into the system.
• Lower torque and drag, supporting easier tripping and fewer operational interruptions.
• More predictable fluid maintenance, with treatments planned from MBT, PV, YP and drilling trends rather than reacting to sudden deterioration.
• Simpler rig-site logistics, with lower treatment volumes and fewer urgent movements of chemicals, water and waste.
• Lower total fluid cost per drilled interval, based on drilling continuity, fluid maintenance, logistics and waste reduction- not simply the purchase price of individual chemicals.
SWELLEX and DRILL FUSION are supplied as concentrated, high-active products rather than heavily diluted formulations, reducing the volume that must be purchased, transported and stored for a given treatment. This makes them practical for operator-managed inventories, multi-country campaigns and remote locations where storage capacity and supply-chain reliability directly affect drilling continuity.
Operational value should still be evaluated through the complete drilling picture: rheology development, MBT trend, dilution volume, cuttings condition, shaker performance, torque and drag, tripping behaviour, bit and BHA condition, treatment frequency and actual drilling continuity.
Flexibility means adapting the system to the well
AQUA FUSION is not one fixed mud recipe for every interval. It is a technical platform adjusted to the available water, formation behaviour, bottomhole temperature, salinity, required density and drilling objective.
The system can be configured for freshwater and monovalent or divalent brine environments by selecting the supporting chemistry around the core system. SWELLEX remains the principal shale-inhibition component, while products such as CS RDF FL and CS VIS BR, together with fluid-loss additives, bridging materials and lubricating components, are incorporated where temperature stability, brine compatibility, rheological support or filtration control is required.
Compatibility testing has also shown that SWELLEX can be incorporated into a CaBr₂-based formulation without disrupting the tested system’s plastic viscosity or filtration control. This supports the use of AQUA FUSION chemistry in divalent environments, although the complete formulation must always be qualified for the intended temperature, water chemistry and contamination risk.
When the drilling objective moves toward a reservoir section, the priorities shift from strong shale inhibition toward control of filtrate and solids invasion, optimized bridging, reservoir-fluid compatibility and an effective cleanup pathway. A reservoir drill-in version of AQUA FUSION keeps the same platform logic with a different filtration and bridging package. Flexibility does not mean forcing one mud formulation into every section; it means changing the supporting chemistry according to what the well actually requires.
From purchasing a fluid to owning an operating capability
For operators drilling across multiple countries or in remote areas, access to an established drilling-fluids service company cannot always be guaranteed. Even where it is available, long mobilisation times, fragmented inventories and externally managed material supply can restrict the operator’s ability to respond quickly to changing well conditions.
Technical ownership offers a different operating model.
The operator can maintain agreed inventories of both specialty products and essential commodity materials, define the fluid programme around its own drilling schedule and reduce its exposure to emergency mobilisation or interruptions in the external supply chain.
The objective is not to remove technical support or field expertise. It is to reduce unnecessary dependence on one service-company structure while giving the operator greater control over its fluid design, inventory and operational decisions.
The model is also particularly valuable where:
• the operator wants direct visibility over product stocks, consumption and replenishment;
• different wells require variations in brine, temperature stability, rheology, filtration or reservoir protection;
• continuity of supply is strategically more important than relying on just-in-time delivery.
Over successive wells, the operator also develops clearer operating know-how: how the fluid behaves across formations, which treatments create measurable value, how consumption can be optimized and how lessons from one well should influence the next programme.
This knowledge improves execution, reduces unnecessary material use and creates better cost visibility. The long-term economic benefit combines lower dilution and waste with more efficient inventory management, fewer emergency logistics, improved drilling continuity and reduced dependence on repeatedly mobilising a complete external service structure.
CS OILFIELD supports this ownership model through system design, laboratory qualification, quality control, operational guidelines, troubleshooting and technical knowledge transfer. The operator retains greater control of the programme while still having access to specialist support when the well requires it.
A system designed to improve with the operation
AQUA FUSION combines strong shale inhibition, practical drilling performance and the flexibility to engineer different brine and reservoir-drilling variants.
Its value is not limited to the first successful application. As teams understand the system, retain critical materials and carry lessons from one well to the next, the fluid programme becomes progressively more efficient and better aligned with the operator’s own drilling demands.
That is the distinction between purchasing a fluid and owning a fluid capability.
